Q: What are the differences between my “official IACS account profile” and “profiles within The SPOT”? How are they connected to one another?

A: There are three different types of profiles for The SPOT:
1. Official IACS account profile for The SPOT — created and managed in IACS
2. Default profile within The SPOT — automatically created when the Official IACS account profile for The SPOT was approved; information is stored in The SPOT database
3. Additional account profiles within The SPOT — created by the user; information is stored in The SPOT database
The primary differences between your Official IACS account profile for The SPOT, the Default profile within The SPOT, and any Additional account profiles within The SPOT are:
• How the profile was created
• The types of information included within the profile
• Where the profile’s information is stored
• How and which information may be changed
‘Official IACS account profile for The SPOT’
Your Official IACS account profile was created when your IACS registration application for The SPOT was approved. The information for this profile is stored in IACS and contains the following information:
• User information (e.g., account holder’s User ID, name, credentials, SSN, date of birth, email)
• Professional contact information (e.g., practice/facility’s name, address, telephone number)
• Provider-specific information:
• PTAN
• TIN/SSN
• Practice official (first name, last name, role)
• Line of business: Part A or Part B
• Geographic location: Florida, Puerto Rico, or U.S. Virgin Islands
• Security information (questions and answers to your security questions)
Once your IACS official account for The SPOT has been established, changes to your IACS account profile must be submitted and approved through IACS. To learn more, please refer to the Modify account FAQ.
‘Default profile within The SPOT’
Your Default profile within The SPOT” was automatically created when your Official IACS account profile for The SPOT was approved. The information for your Default profile within The SPOT is stored within The SPOT database and includes the following information:
• User ID
• Profile nickname — Default
Note: The Profile nickname for your “default account” may be changed by following the steps outlined in the through the Edit a profile FAQ.
• Provider-specific information:
• PTAN
• TIN/SSN
• Practice official (first name, last name, role)
• Line of business: Part A or Part B
• Geographic location: Florida, Puerto Rico, or U.S. Virgin Islands
The provider-specific information (e.g., NPI, PTAN, SSN/TIN) stored in your Default Profile will match the corresponding information in your IACS account profile.
Note: The nickname for your Default Profile may be changed by completing the Edit a profile form, which may be accessed from the drop-down menu on The SPOT.
‘Additional profiles within The SPOT’
An Additional profile within The SPOT is a profile that contains provider-specific information that differs from the Default profile within The SPOT as well as the Official IACS account profile for The SPOT.
Although the Default profile within The SPOT is mandatory for access to The SPOT, an account holder may decide to create “additional profiles” if one or more of the following criteria have been met:

• The practice/facility has multiple physicians and non-physician practitioners who have not reassigned their Medicare benefits and bill Medicare separately (i.e., under their own NPI, PTAN, and SSN/TIN).
• The practice/facility bills Medicare for Part A and Part B services
• The practice/facility bills Medicare for items or services furnished to beneficiaries in more than one geographic location within the jurisdiction.

Each Additional profile within The SPOT contains the following information:
• Profile nickname (e.g., Dr._Sherlock_Holmes)
• Provider-specific information:
• PTAN
• TIN/SSN
• Practice official (first name, last name, role)
• Line of business: Part A or Part B
• Geographic location: Florida, Puerto Rico, or U.S. Virgin Islands

An Additional profile within The SPOT must be requested by the account holder by completing and submitting an Additional profile request form, which may be accessed from the drop-down menu on The SPOT. The request will be reviewed and approved or denied by The SPOT help desk.
To learn how to create an Additional profile within The SPOT, please follow the steps outlined in Add a profile FAQ. Once an Additional profile within The SPOT has been created, if any information — other than the Profile nickname — needs to be changed, a new Additional profile request form must be submitted.
Note: The Additional profile within The SPOT containing the outdated information (e.g., NPI, PTAN) may be removed by following the steps in Remove a profile within The SPOT FAQ.
